Runs Like an Antelope looked to the north across the snow-covered prairie. The snow had covered all signs of the White men they were following. He turned back to the others and said, “They are gone. We must return to help finish our buffalo hunt. It could take many suns to find these white men. Now we have no tracks to follow.”

“No!” Black Otter shouted. “I will not stop until all their scalps hang from our lances. If I must go on alone, I will, but I will not go back without their scalps.”

“You will not go alone,” Red Calf told him. Then turned to the others and said, “Runs Like an Antelope is right. The rest of you must return. The village needs the buffalo. Black Otter and I will find these men and we will take our revenge.”

Runs Like an Antelope nodded and said, “Remember the smoke from their gun carries with it strong medicine.”

Both Black Otter and Red Calf nodded and watched their friends all turn and ride away.

“Runs Like an Antelope is correct, Black Otter,” Red Calf said. “The snow has covered their tracks. We are getting deep into the land of the Cheyenne and Lakota. There could be Crow or Blackfeet, or many other enemies this far north.”

“If you do not wish to follow them, why did you not go back with the others?” Black Otter asked.

“I not do not wish to go back, Black Otter, I only say we need to watch for more than the medicine smoke from the white man’s guns.”

Black Otter nodded and asked, but did not expect an answer, and did not get one, “Where are they going?”

The two of them continued north, the way the White men had been traveling for the past two days. With the snow, they could not follow the tracks as the White men had veered off to the west.
